What You Can Win
The OpenP2P.com JXTA Project Developers Contest will award two prizes for the best software
developed using the Project JXTA protocols for distributed network computing.
First Place Prize: Full conference pass to the O'Reilly Peer-to-Peer and Web Services Conference (a value of $1,495.00) and
a Yopy PDA (a value of $590) and a digital camera for the Yopy (a value of $70).
Second Place Prize: A Yopy PDA and a digital camera.
Prize Details
The O'Reilly Peer-to-Peer and Web Services Conference will be held at the Omni
Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. on September 17-20, 2001. It is an event exploring
the technical, business, and legal dimensions of the the next generation of the Internet.
The prize includes only the conference pass, and does not include hotel, travel, or other
related expenses, which are the obligation of the winner.
The Yopy is a multimedia PDA based on Linux and Yopy, featuring total mobile access
to email, digital voice recorder, MP3 player, MPEG video player, and video games all in
true color. This version includes the full development kit as well as a digital camera for the Yopy.
Criteria/Entry Requirements

To enter the Contest, you must complete the registration form, and subsequently email your code to us as described after you have completed registration.
Deadlines for Entry and Prize Date
All entries must be received by Sunday, July 15, 2001 at 11:59 p.m. (PDT) to be eligible
for consideration. Final prizes will be awarded on or before September 15, 2001.
Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration as one of the Contest's winning submissions, applications
must use the Project JXTA technology. The new services and applications should interoperate
with Project JXTA peer nodes running the Project JXTA Shell available for download from http://www.jxta.org and/or Project JXTA peer nodes running InstantP2P, also available for download from
http://www.jxta.org.
The software can be implemented in any language or programming environment and can run
on any computing device. The software can freely use any of the existing software
technology on http://www.jxta.org. All entries must be made available for license to third parties on a non-discriminatory royalty-free basis under an "Apache/BSD"-style license.
Who Can Enter
The Contest is open to all legal residents of the United States and Canada (excluding
Quebec) who are 18 years of age or older at time of entry and meet all other qualifying
requirements as set forth in these rules. Employees of O'Reilly & Associates, Inc.
(O'Reilly) and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Sun), their affiliates, their advertising,
promotion, production, and certification agencies and members of their immediate
families or those with whom they are domiciled are not eligible.
How We'll Evaluate Your Application (aka Contest Evaluation Criteria)
The Contest is not a game of chance, and each application submitted by an entrant must
meet specific qualifying criteria (described on this page). All application entries will be
judged using the criteria listed below.
All judging criteria will be weighted (on a scale of 1 to 10) to determine the score for
points earned. The highest scores will determine the first- and second-place winners.
Depending on the number of entries, a committee may prescreen applications.
Each entry will be evaluated for the following attributes:
- Originality
- Interoperability with other JXTA peer nodes
- Functionality (Consumer or Business)
- Performance and lack of obvious bugs
- Reusability of the implementation
More Important Information
Prizes will be awarded based on the highest-scoring qualifying applications using all of
the Contest Evaluation Criteria. All applications will be tested and evaluated by
OpenP2P.com's Judging Team. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined by the
highest score in functionality. All
decisions by the judges shall be final. Prize winners will be notified by email. Should the
owner of the winning submission not claim his/her award, the second place winner shall
be awarded the first prize, and the third place winner the second etc.
Prizes are nontransferable, and non-endorsable; no cash or other substitutions will be
offered. All federal, state, and local taxes, travel expenses, and delivery charges are the
responsibility of the winners.
This contest is co-sponsored by openp2p.com, part of the O'Reilly Network, and Sun
Microsystems, Inc. By submitting applications to this Contest, all entrants to the Contest
grant O'Reilly and Sun the right to use and publish the entrant's name, state and country
of residence, in marketing and press materials, in both online and print media.
Applications may be used by O'Reilly and Sun for display and/or general marketing
efforts. Winners will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility, liability
release and grant permission to use their name and likeness for advertising and promotion
(without further compensation to the winner).
In no event will O'Reilly Network, O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. or Sun Microsystems,
Inc. be responsible for damages or losses, including lost profits, lost savings, incidental or
consequential damages as a result of entering The Project JXTA Developers Contest.
If for any reason the Internet portion of the program is not capable of running as planned,
including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud,
technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of O'Reilly which corrupt or
affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the Contest,
O'Reilly reserves the right at its sole discretion, to disqualify any entrant who tampers
with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest.
O'Reilly reserves the right to modify the prize distribution at any time. O'Reilly, Sun
Microsystems, and its agents are not responsible for lost entries, or for any unavailability
of information on the Internet, for whatever reason. Entries will be disqualified if
O'Reilly determines, at its sole discretion, that entrants have attempted to circumvent the
terms and conditions of these rules. All decisions by O'Reilly are final. Each winning
entrant agrees to execute an Affidavit of Eligibility and a Liability and Publicity Release
prior to receiving the prize, if required by O'Reilly and Sun Microsystems.
By participating in this Contest, entrants agree to release and hold O'Reilly Network and
Sun Microsystems (and their employees, agents, representatives, or affiliated companies)
harmless from any and all losses, damages, rights, claims, and actions of any kind in
connection with the Contest or resulting from acceptance, possession, or use of an prize,
including, without limitation, personal injuries, death or property damage, and claims
based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy.
